Solar panel systems allow you to choose how much energy you produce based on the system that you install. Depending on your budget, it’s possible to offset 100% of your electricity bills with solar power. It’s also possible to generate more electricity than you can use, then allowing you to sell back to the National Grid via Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

Solar power is essentially free energy. Once the initial costs have been made with installation, all power is taken from the sun, which is a renewable energy source. It vastly reduces the need to draw energy from the grid, which uses non-renewable energy sources for power, thus vastly reducing your carbon footprint.

How Do Solar Panels Work?

How do they generate electricity?

Solar panels are also referred to as Photovoltaic (PV) panels. Their job is to convert the light that is produced by the sun to then create energy or in this case, electricity.

It does this via a series of cells that are installed onto the panels. These cells are semiconductors and are made up of silicon which increases the absorption rate of light.

Each panel comes with a positive and negative terminal, which in turn creates an electrical circuit. The power that is generated from each panel is in Direct Current (DC), but for it to work in a home environment, it needs to be an Alternating Current (AC). To do this the power flows into a solar converter, which then switches the DC energy into usable AC energy.

Electricity can then either flow into a battery where it is stored, or it can flow directly into the home’s electricity meter before the fuse box. The meter is an important aspect of the solar panel system as this tells the system if there is enough power stored in the battery if there is enough power to bring in direct from the solar panels or if they need to call on the main grid supply to cover the usage.

Depending on the number and size of the solar panels that you install will depend on how much electricity you can produce. It’s common that we install setups that create more electricity than the house needs to run, in which case there is a surplus.

When this occurs, we recommend introducing battery storage. This allows you to store power to either sell back to the grid as part of the government’s SEG commitment or to use at a later date when more power is needed than can be supplied, usually based on weather conditions (I.E. Winter months).

The size of the battery will vary and at EcoFuture we provide a wide selection of products from a variety of manufacturers such as GivEnergy, Enphase, Tesla, Victron Energy and Solis. Our goal with all aspects of solar panel installation in the North East, is to work with clients to provide a system that is going to produce maximum output based on budget.

Can Anyone Have Solar Panels?

The vast majority of homes in the North East and Northumberland will be able utilise solar panels. We pride ourselves on being able to design and install solutions for all homes, but there are some factors that make solar panels more efficient.

We start by looking at the location of the house and the direction of the roof. Ideally, the roof in question would be south facing and at a pitch of 35 degrees this will allow for a 100% energy output from the system. However, even roofs at a 90-degree pitch and North West facing will benefit from solar panels, but at a reduced rate of around 30% efficiency.

It’s worth noting that solar panels don’t have to be installed on a roof. There are free-standing options that can be used in gardens or fields at ground level. Where there are limitations on roof orientation or space, then these are viable alternatives.

How Much Power Can Solar Panels Generate?

The size of the system and the orientation and pitch of your roof will determine how much power the solar panels can create. It’s very plausible for a relatively small setup to create enough energy to provide your home with an entire year’s worth of electricity, giving you clean, free energy all year round.

Each system that we design and install at EcoFutre is bespoke. Nothing is simply “off the shelf” which allows us to maximise the potential energy you create. The average home uses around 2,900 kWh of electricity per year, which would allow our JA Solar 3.85Kw system to run at 100% efficiency to power the whole house and have some left over to sell back to the grid (assumed used with battery storage).

Can You Make Money from Solar Panels?

You can make money from solar panels using the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). SEG has been put in place to allow homes to sell excess electricity back to the grid. To do so you need battery storage which will save surplus electricity and feed it directly from your meter.

Most larger energy firms will have a tariff that you can use for this electricity, much in the same way as you would buy it. This will range, but a good tariff is around 4p to 6p per kWh. However, it’s possible to get up to 15p/kWH, so take the time to shop around for the best price.

SEG is one of the key ways that homes can offset energy prices and vastly reduce the break-even timeframe for your installation.

Our Process: Solar Panel Installation

At EcoFuture we start with a consultation to see what you want to get from your solar panel installation. We can then advise on the best products to use to meet those demands before agreeing on a timeline of work. If you have a budget in mind, please let us know from the start so we can work toward this.

Once agreed upon, the installation process will include the following steps:

We erect scaffolding around the house to ensure that our team has access to the roof. For ground installations, this is not needed.

Solar panel mounts are then installed onto the roof. The mounts are adjustable and give us around 18 degrees of movement to ensure that the panels are at the best possible angle based on the pitch of your roof.

The panels are fixed to the mounts and attached using high-quality masonry fixings.

We now begin the wiring process. The housing supply will be shut off for this step as we hook the panels up using MC4 connectors.

Once the panels are wired, we install the solar inverter. We work with our clients to choose a suitable spot for this which can be installed outdoors, but ideally indoors in a cool place.

If you choose to have battery storage, then the inverter will be connected to this. If you decide against this, then we will link this to the main consumer unit. The consumer unit will have a generation meter that will allow you to see how much energy your panels create and how much you are using. This can be linked to a computer or mobile app.

Upon completion we perform a series of final tests to make sure everything is working as it should. The project is only signed off when the customer is happy and up to speed with how the new system works.
