Solar Panels are made up of a series of cells that are usually silicone. These cells absorb light and use semiconductors to then turn this light into energy. Most panels have dozens of cells that have the capacity to make around 355W of energy.

Once the light hits the cells it creates a current. The current created is a Direct Current (DC), but to power homes, these need to be converted into an Alternating Current (AC). To enable this, the current flows from the panels into a converter located in the home. The converter changes the power from DC to AC, which allows it to be used as electrical power.

There are several options that you can choose at this point as to how the energy is distributed. A standard system will draw power straight from the panels, via the converter and use it as needed. The addition of battery packs allows power to be pulled constantly and stored only to be used as called upon.

It’s possible to use solar power as a standalone energy point if it generates enough power to do so. If this is not possible, then you can use solar with your existing energy supply. The control module for your system will be programmed to use solar energy first, before calling on the mains supply for any excess energy that is needed.

A conventional system will simply inform the panels that no energy is needed, so they won’t be put to work.

However, the inclusion of battery storage means that your panels can keep working when you don’t call for energy and store it until you do. This creates excess power that can be used either in times when the power of the sun is low (winter, for example) or if there is still surplus, can send it back to the grid, earning you money for each KW that you sell.

How much power do solar panels output?

There are multiple factors that contribute to the amount of power that solar panels can generate. The type of panel is a key place to start. We use JA Solar for most of our panels, which is one of the leading solar panel manufacturers in the industry. Each panel has the capacity to create around 385W of energy. The more panels, the more energy they can create.

The efficiency of the location of panels is next. They need to be dead south facing at a pitch of around 35 degrees with no light obstructions, such as trees or power lines.

Even systems with less-than-perfect efficiency can power entire homes quite comfortably. In a lot of cases, it’s possible to create more than you would need, which means you can sell back to the grid to make money.

Can you make money from Installing solar?

Solar panel systems that create excess energy can sell this back to the grid using the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This is a government-led initiative that allows homeowners to distribute unused power back into the grid without having to pay taxes or class earnings as income.

To do this you need a battery system in place to store the energy. This is linked to an export meter that will highlight how much electricity is in the battery, how much you need, and then how much can be sent back to the grid for profit.

Just like buying electricity, selling electricity comes with a rate per kWh attached. The average is around 4-6p/kWh, but there are tariffs worth up to 15p/kWh. The more electricity you generate the more you can sell back, which is worth noting when it comes to plans for the initial installation.

We assess the area in that you want the solar panels installed before then offering up a range of options that will fit your criteria and budget. Once this has been agreed upon, the installation can begin.

Following that the work starts:

We need scaffolding to erect the panels on the roof. If you’re installing a ground-level solar panel system, then this is not necessary.

The roof is assessed to make sure that it can take the additional weight. If any changes need to be made, we can recommend the work that needs to take place. Once satisfied, we will install mounts for the panels to rest on.

Panels are then fixed to the mounts. Each of the mounts has around 18 degrees of tilt, meaning we can adjust them to get the most exposure from the sun.

Once the panels have been linked, we wire them to your home. We use MC4 connectors to do this.

Wires will lead into an inverter which changes the power from DC to AC. This means that its compatible to work within existing home electrical circuits.

The inverter is then connected to the main consumer unit. This will include a meter that allows users to track the amount of power that’s been generated and then used. If you’re using battery storage you can see how much is being stored before then being sold back to the grid. All this information can be linked to a computer for easy access.

Finally, we test the system and tweak it to maximise performance. Any issues or snags are addressed at this point.
